The power of manipulation

Tonight Nathan ate trees for dinner. It's one of the only ways I've ever gotten him to eat broccoli.

The other night we ate peas and carrots very loudly and very obnoxiously, like monsters.

Sometimes the only way to get Nathan to do something is to manipulate him. As bad as that sounds, it's true.

With his 2nd birthday quickly approaching I am having anxiety because he still uses a bottle. He will drink water and juice out of a cup but when it comes to milk, it has to be bottle and it has to be warm! How did we create such a diva???

I've tried every trick in the book to get this kid to drink milk out of a cup.
Chocolate milk - Nope.
Adding pureed strawberries to it - Nada.
Mixing it with yogurt. - Zilch.
Putting it in a dinosaur cup and calling it monster milk - Fat chance.
Mixing it 50/50 with water - Doesn't fool him.

If anybody has any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them. The only other thing we can think of is to just pack away all the bottles one of these days and make him go cold turkey.

How many miserable days will it take before he caves and drinks cold milk from a cup??
Who will cave first, him or me??
Somehow I will manipulate this child into drinking cold milk from a cup...right???

  1. we got rid of kaylahs binkie when she turned 2 by having a party. we sent the binkies away on balloons and waved good bye to them in our yard. then we had ice cream and cupcakes. i talked about it for a week with a count on the calendar. it was good because when she would ask for them we would talk about that day and she would remember then be okay. i used the excuse of her being a big sister. (i did it as soon as we brought caitlyn home) big sisters dont have binkies only babies do.

  2. I was going to say the exact thing as your friend above. When I worked with tots, it was very effective. Make an event out of it. Bring it up a lot in leading up to it. You could say since he'll be 2 he'll be a big boy & only babies drink bottles, not big boys. My cousin's parents were having the worst time getting her to give up the bottle. The pediatrician told her only babies get bottles & if she wants to be a big girl she needs to give it up & POOF that was it.

Another method I've seen work well is if you have someone else who has a baby around saying that the baby needs the bottle & making a huge deal out of Nathan giving them to baby.

  3. If he doesn't get milk for a few days, nothing bad will happen. Gavin doesn't really drink milk, I make him fruit smoothies or give him cheese or cream cheese on a bagel. He is fine with calcium that way.
